Galatians 2

The Council at Jerusalem

1Then after an interval of fourteen years I awent up again to Jerusalem with bBarnabas, taking cTitus along also. 2
Lit according to revelation I went up
It was because of a erevelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the fgospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be grunning, or had run, in vain.
3But not even hTitus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was icompelled to be circumcised. 4But it was because of the jfalse brethren secretly brought in, who khad sneaked in to spy out our lliberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to mbring us into bondage. 5But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that nthe truth of the gospel would remain with you. 6But from those who
Lit seemed to be something
were of high preputation (what they were makes no difference to me; qGod
Lit does not receive a face
shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.
7But on the contrary, seeing that I had been sentrusted with the tgospel
Lit of the uncircumcision
to the uncircumcised, just as vPeter had been
Lit of the circumcision
to the circumcised
8(for He who effectually worked for Peter in his xapostleship
Lit of the circumcision
to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),
9and recognizing zthe grace that had been given to me,
Or Jacob
,
abJames and acCephas and John, who were adreputed to be aepillars, gave to me and afBarnabas the agright
Lit hands
hand of fellowship, so that we might ai go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
10They only asked us to remember the poorajthe very thing I also was eager to do.

Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul

11But when akCephas came to alAntioch, I opposed him to his face, because he
Or was to be condemned; lit was one who was condemned, or, was self-condemned
stood condemned.
12For prior to the coming of certain men from
Or Jacob
,
aoJames, he used to apeat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, aqfearing
Or converts from the circumcised; lit those from the circumcision
the party of the circumcision.
13The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even asBarnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that they atwere not
Or progressing toward; lit walking straightly
straightforward about avthe truth of the gospel, I said to awCephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, axlive like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?
Some close the direct quotation here, others extend it through v 21

15“We are azJews by nature and not basinners from among the Gentiles; 16nevertheless knowing that bba man is not justified by the works of
Or law
the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by bdfaith in Christ and not by the works of
Or law
the Law; since bfby the works of
Or law
the Law no
Or mortal man
flesh will be justified.
17But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found bisinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? bjMay it never be! 18For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I bkprove myself to be a transgressor. 19For through
Or law
the Law I bmdied to
Or law
the Law, so that I might live to God.
20“I have been bocrucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but bpChrist lives in me; and
Or insofar as I
the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in brthe Son of God, who bsloved me and btgave Himself up for me.
21I do not nullify the grace of God, for buif righteousness comes through
Or law
the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”
